The future of texting with Mighty SMS: what I do instead of IM

Table of Contents

For the past year I’ve been using the free version of Mighty SMS (phone app | tablet app –sorry; Android only) to text message from my computer, actually using my phone and its phone number. The app is slick and light-weight: it does one thing and does it well. I now almost never text from my touch-screen, but get the full speed of my keyboard by logging into the web app in my browser (which I keep pinned). This means I can write as easily as any instant messaging program, but gain the dependability of text messaging (since many of my friends and myself may not regularly check Google hangouts or other programs). It also means that I can discretely check for important messages from, say, my wife during a note-taking or a job on the computer. Another bonus is that it automatically uploads my images so that it’s easy to save images that were texted to me (or that I texted) onto my computer. The “power view” screen in the image above means I can monitor six or more conversations at at time, something else that is cumbersome via current IM options.

Of course, the app isn’t perfect. Sometimes there is lag with sending a message (although this is a problem I am seeing less and less of); I also find myself in serious want of shortcut keys in the online app. Nonetheless, I now consider Mighty SMS an integral part of my workflow.
